So academic background, professional background, hands on sound, enriched & long exposure, integrity, meritorious services, etc etc which are commonly considered as elements of job security, were wiped away from the minds of the employer when recession intruded. But aftermath effect had left a very positive turn around in working class which they considered & reconsidered again and again that forced them to changes their views and aspiration to select temporary or contractual or even daily wages employment as their career bump & earning scope. Insecurity to job is no more a fear factor now as the world runs on gig economy.

More a person is flexible in its approach and receptivity to temporary job of varied nature without stretching his daily employment hours, he turns up with the brightest choice of the employer. Thus his daily or weekly or fortnightly or monthly income is not restricted within a minimum or fair wages, but the person schedules his choice to earning exclusively on his own with option to maintain his work life balance in the most desirable way.

Current trend of temporary job is a product of tremendous level of technological up gradation, advent of cloud based operation & data management, maximizing automation of manufacturing process as well as routine office activities, which is pushing permanent job to extermination.

Consistency in performance is the basic requirement of gig jobs. Perform or get discarded, is the concept. Also persons aged between 18 to 35 years is preferred over others owing to stable health condition to maintain a consistent hard work and perform up to the expectation.

E-commerce business claims a sizeable stake in the market today for sheer dependence on comparatively younger work force, reason, it involves either extensive travels or working during odd hours even up to late night duty. A first draft of Labour Code on Social Security was published and put in the public domain on 16th March 2017, for comments of stakeholders. In this attempt the Code on Social security Code in the form of a Bill has been prepared after amalgamating, simplifying and rationalizing the relevant provisions of the central labour enactments :-

  • Unorganised Workers’ Social Security Act, 2008 (Gig workers will be covered under this act)
  • The Employees’ Compensation Act, 1923
  • The Employees’ State Insurance Act, 1948
  • The Employees’ Provident Funds and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1952
  • The Maternity Benefit Act, 1961
  • The Payment of Gratuity Act, 1972

At the labour force end, it has no location bar, which means gig jobs can be performed from anywhere, do not require to change place of domicile. Entire global market is lying open before gig workers! Gig job is not time barred also because it can be done at any hours at the sole flexibility of the doers.

New age companies has unveiled the demand of short term & free time jobs on one’s exclusive choice and it has proven to be a huge success. It has tempted employable workforce to embrace platform job as a means of their livelihood now. Labour force are not assessed especially against their performance parameter solely and gets relieved of employment in failure to come up with the desired level of performance. Success of an organization needs to rationalize their structure in such a manner as to be more dexterous to attract their customer most. A herd of Big Employers in the market is curiously watching the market movement wheeling on gig workers and many of them has also pledged their investment to yield the market result as a conscious option for survival. Stagnancy in Government jobs, abolition of numerous position, ceasing of recruitment to any permanent post owing to large scale digitization and automation, has left a huge crisis in permanent employment market, which is one of the most basic cause of evolving gig economy.
